Chad Ricklefs has been competing in ultramarathons at a national level since 1998 and reached an all-time high in his career in 2011, placing 11th overall at the 2011 IAU 100 km World Championships in Winschoten, NE. Chad’s time of 7:07 helped the US team capture the gold medal and he won the individual World Masters 100 km Championship. He is a former US National 100 km Road Champion, winning the 2002 USA Championships. In 2004 Chad was the US National 50 Mile Road Champion and he also posted the fastest 50 Mile time of the year in the US – running a 5:24 at the Tallahassee 50 Mile road race. Prior to competing on the road, he enjoyed success on the trails, having won the prestigious Leadville Trail 100 Mile race in 2000 and 2002. Ricklefs was named the USATF Ultrarunner of the Year in 2002.

 Spartathlon revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.

Described as the world's most grueling race, the Spartathlon runs over rough tracks and muddy paths, crosses vineyards and olive groves, climbs steep hillsides and, most challenging of all, takes the runners on the 1,200 meter ascent and descent of Mount Parthenio in the dead of night.
